With the release of their sophomore album, Total Life Forever, Foals have proven that they remain at the top of their game, streamlining their glitchy indie sound into a mature collection of tracks. Always noted for their electric live performances, tonight I’ve caught Foals performing in the wake of Total Life Forever’s release, with a crowd excited to see the new material performed live.
Opening with the new album’s title track makes for an interesting start, the song sounding perfect live, but the crowd seemingly new to it. They then play ‘Cassius’ which immediately ups the anti, and suddenly there’s a huge realisation of how broad their fans have become. There are riotous scenes as the contents of the ridiculous two pint pitchers being served here get unwillingly shared. This is followed by an ongoing blend of tracks both new and old, highlighting the strength of both albums. ‘Miami’ and ‘This Orient’ both sound as uplifting and bouncy as on record, while when they play ‘Blue Blood’ and ‘Spanish Sahara’ back to back, it really is something special; the crowd taking time to absorb the sound, whilst trying to ignore the distracting and out of time handclaps some fans are relentless with.
Yannis plays the perfect frontman as ever, with exploits including jumping on speakers and running through the crowd as they roll through their 12 song set. Their encore consists of ‘French Open’ and ‘Two Steps Twice’ from Antidotes leaving the crowd wanting more. Those yet to hear the album will certainly be making it a necessity, whilst those who have will be leaving assured of Foals’ ability to pull the new material off live.
