SWTHRT.

The early-80s was a great time for music. The likes of Jesus and Mary Chain and Killing Joke kicked off the New Wave movement that still provides inspiration for bands today, and North Carolina’s SWTHRT are certainly in thrall to that sound. Basically, if you like those sorts of sounds, you’ll like this.

This duo (Karl Kuehn and Becca High) have fashioned some sub-three minute dream-pop charmers on their recently released debut Compact Disc. The classic qualities are there to be found, from the shimmering fuzz of the background distortion, to the hook-laden scree of guitars and the anti-sentimentalist lyricism. Compact Disc is a great exercise in understated lo-fi. And, it’s free to download from their bandcamp. Result.
