There’s something quite weird about Gross Magic. It might be that when Sam McGarrigle sings he sounds like a British Blondie who’s eaten too many skittles. In a good way.
Anyway, Brighton-based McGarrigle is set to release his debut EP, Teen Jamz, under the moniker in early August. Judging from ‘Sweetest Touch’ it’ll be a sugar-rushed affair that, according to Sam himself, is sweet on “the pop sensibility of ELO, the grunge riffs of early Nirvana, the care-free adolescence of ‘Loser’-era Beck and the lo-fi production of Ariel Pink”. Spot on. In all honesty, Gross Magic kind of recalls a naughty Saved By The Bell. Listen to ‘Sweetest Touch’ below, and head to the bandcamp page to pre-order the five track EP.
